Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How often should I visit the dentist for cleaning and check ups?

It is recommended to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and professional cleaning to maintain optimal oral health. However, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits based on your individual dental needs.

Do you offer emergency dental care?

Yes! We understand that dental emergencies happen unexpectedly. If you're experiencing a dental emergency, please contact our office immediately, and we'll accommodate you as soon as possible.

I am very anxious at the dentist, what do you offer?

At Carlton Dental, we understand that dental anxiety is a common concern for many patients. Our team is dedicated to creating a comfortable and relaxing environment for your dental care from the moment you arrive at our office. We offer various options, including sedation dentistry such as Nitrous (laughing gas), to help you feel at ease during your visit. Please feel free to discuss your concerns with our team so that we can provide you with the best possible experience.

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. Early visits help establish good oral habits and allow us to monitor development.

What are cavities?

Dental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being. One common dental issue that many of us face is cavities, which if left untreated, can lead to more serious dental problems. However, thanks to dental restorations, also known as fillings, we can effectively treat cavities and restore the health and integrity of our teeth.

Cavities are small holes that develop on the surface of your teeth as a result of tooth decay. They are often caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks, and not cleaning your teeth well. If untreated, cavities can lead to severe toothache, infection, and even tooth loss. Want to learn how to prevent cavities?

Dental fillings are a common method used to treat cavities. When you have a cavity, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then "fill" the area on the tooth where the decayed material once lived. These fillings provide much-needed structure and integrity to the compromised tooth, effectively strengthening it and preventing further decay.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?

If your child is experiencing a toothache, call our office as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can give them an over-the-counter pain reliever (dosage based on age and weight) to help ease discomfort.

Do you accept my dental insurance?

We accept a wide range of insurance plans. When you call to schedule an appointment, we can verify your insurance coverage and let you know what to expect in terms of coverage. We also help with filing claims.

Do you bill directly to insurance ?

How can I maintain good oral hygiene at home?

To maintain good oral hygiene, brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes using a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and use an antibacterial mouthwash. Additionally, maintain a balanced diet and avoid excessive consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages.

What can I do if I have bad breath?

Bad breath can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor oral hygiene, gum disease, dry mouth, or certain medical conditions. We can help identify the cause and recommend treatments such as professional cleanings, more thorough brushing and flossing, or other solutions based on the underlying issue.

How can I prevent cavities?

The best way to prevent cavities is by brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. We can also apply sealants to vulnerable areas of your teeth to offer extra protection.

What is the difference between a filling and a crown?

filling is used to restore a tooth that has decay or damage. It fills the cavity and helps protect the tooth. A crown is a cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function, especially when the tooth is significantly compromised (e.g., after a root canal or due to large decay).

What is a root canal ?

A root canal is often necessary when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed or has a deep infection inside. It involves removing the infected pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), cleaning the area, and sealing it to prevent further infection.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Gum disease is preventable with proper oral hygiene—brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing the dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups. If you smoke or have conditions like diabetes, you may need to be extra vigilant about your gum health.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is generally safe when performed under the supervision of a dentist. We offer both in-office whitening and take-home kits, and we’ll help you choose the best option based on your needs and any concerns you may have.

What cosmetic dental services do you offer?

We offer a variety of cosmetic dental services to enhance your smile, including teeth whitening, veneers, and Invisalign®. During your consultation, we'll discuss your goals and recommend the best cosmetic treatments to achieve the smile you desire.

What is Invisalign®?
